Our very own Dr. Courtney “Nuka” Plante was interviewed in Psychology Today in a piece called, “More Than Just a Pretty Face: Unmasking the Furry Fandom.”
Dr. Plante travelled to NYC to give a talk at the “Alt Sex” Conference to explain why Furry is NOT a Fetish!
so i’m wandering if there is anyway I might be able to get onto this research team.
You should message any of the co-founders whose academic area best aligns with yours, and they’ll take it from there.
so, i’m a furry, and i’ve been wondering why people normally wish to bully us, we’re just misunderstood people.
I am also a furry (mostly as a fetish, though) and I can see the other perspective. People see the fursuits and are creeped out by them. They feel uncomfortable, some rightly so. However, some (a lot) choose to act out on this feeling of unease by harassing members of the community.
Given your self-identification, I wonder what your thoughts are on the mainstream media reducing the fandom to only a fetish, as described in the article “Furry is not a Fetish“
The mainstream media and television portrayals haven’t helped…until very recently, but it’s still too few. Even very open-minded, socially inclusive people/organizations tend to have a negative opinion of Furries if their only experience of Furries is through popular media portrayals. This is why Furscience does outreach to the media where appropriate to set the record straight with the science to-date. A good example of this happening in real-time is listening to Dr Roberts being interviewed by Jenny McCarthy who started off being very critical and then changes her mind once she hears what the fandom is really about. What you can do is reach out to us when/if you see a misrepresentation (Twitter, Facebook, or here), and we can see where they’ve taken the portrayal off the rails and hopefully they’ll give us a chance to correct the record. Note, this is only for legitimate organizations or people who’ve honestly made mistakes, not the haters or trolls who couldn’t care less about the facts, and are just looking for attention 😉
